6. Hiram Hardegree married Caroline A. "Callie" Mays on 8 Jun 1861 in Henry Co., GA and died of "typhoid pneumonia" on
11 Jan 1863 in Lynchburg, Campbell Co., VA during his service in the Civil War. Caroline married second to Richard M.
Morris on 18 Mar 1875 in Henry Co., GA.
David Gode shared his research findings on a son, Edward E. Hardegree, who was born to Hiram and Caroline.
When the Hardegree book was published, I had noted that Caroline was on the 1870 Henry Co. census as the head
of her household with Mays relatives. Mr. Gode wrote that Caroline's parents were listed in a separate household
right above her. In her parents' household, there was an Edward H., born about 1861 in GA, who is believed to be
Caroline's son, Edward E. Hardegree. On the 1880 Gwinnett Co., GA census, Caroline was with her second husband
and an Edward Morris, born circa 1863 in GA. Again this Edward is believed to be Edward E. Hardegree, not her
husband's son from a previous marriage. Edward signed his mother's death certificate. Caroline was born 25 Aug
1839 in GA and died 5 Feb 1928 in Palestine, Anderson Co., TX.
1. Edward E. Hardegree was born 10 Mar 1862 in GA and died 22 May 1942 in Palestine, Anderson Co., TX.
He married F. J. Adams. In the Crawford Cemetery, Slocum, Anderson Co., TX where Caroline is buried, there
is a Lucy Annie Hardegree (3 Nov 1882 - 27 May 1898). Since she is the only Hardegree in this cemetery, the
only connection she possibly has is to Caroline who probably was her grandmother. F. J. (Adams) Hardegree
must have died before 19 Aug 1889 when Edward married Laura Cromell in Anderson Co., TX. Mr. Gode also
found newspaper articles showing Edward E. Hardegree as a policeman off and on in Palestine during 1907 to
1909. He ran for sheriff in the democratic primary in Jul 1908 but lost. Mention was made of him visiting his
mother in Elkhart and visa versa and of going on a hunting trip there.

56. Mary Susan Hardigree married Robert Jesse Oakes in the early 1940s. She was born 21 Apr 1908 in Mt. Vernon,

Rockcastle Co., KY. Robert was born 19 Feb 1915. They both died Dec 1985, 3 days apart, in Dublin, Wayne

Co., IN. They left one son, James Harrison Oakes.

From Alma I. (Proffitt) Hix (10 Mar 2003): "Mary Susan Hardigree Oakes was blind from birth and when

my Grandmother Martha Hardigree married William H. Proffitt, they took her to live with them. She helped raise

my dad and his brothers and sisters. Great-aunt Mary was a wonderful woman and a blessing to all of us.

I remember when my mom was very sick and had to have surgery, it was Aunt Mary who came to take care of

us. I have seen her rock her little boy to sleep and brush her hand down over his face to see if his eyes were

closed. She had very very long hair and it was not cut until about 2 years before her death. I loved her dearly."
