Martha (Hardigree / Hardegree) Grimes (1 Jun 1829 GA - 17 Jan 1909 Coweta Co., GA)
An obituary was added to her page at FindAGrave.com by Kimberly Karnes who maintains her page.  Also included is
a photo of her marker.  Her husband Calvin Grimes has a page on this website as well as their two children, Mary
Elizabeth (Grimes) Barfield and Fredrick Zachariah Grimes.  All of them are buried at Elim Baptist Church Cemetery,
Handy, Coweta Co., GA.  Thanks to Kimberly Karnes for posting her obituary online.
From The Herald and Advertiser, 9 Apr 1909:
"Resolutions on the Death of Mrs Martha Grimes, By Elim Baptist Church  Mrs. Martha Grimes, widow of
Calvin Grimes, deceased, was born June 1, 1829, and died Jan. 19, 1909.  Five children survive her, namely:
Mrs. J. T. Cash, Mrs. John Haisten, Mrs. E. Barfield, Calvin Grimes and Mort Grimes.  In many respects,
Sister Grimes was an ideal woman; modest, gentle and pure.  She delighted in goodness and exercised charity
toward all.  The manner of her going away was doubtless an answer to her prayer.  After singing several favorite
songs and assuring those around her of being in the presence of God, her soul took its flight from earth to
heaven.  Though her shoulders were stooped with the burden of a long life, to those who knew her she was
beautiful.  What a gentle hand in sickness, what a voice to sooth pain!  And was there anyone who could so fill
up a room with peace, purity and light as she?  What a sad day it was when the children and grandchildren
came home and she could not greet them, for her voice was forever stilled.  Come back, mother, take your
old place in the home; open and read to us from the bible; kneel and pray; and look upon us, as of old.  But,
no, it would not be fair to call you back.  You had troubles, aches and bereavements enough while here.
Tarry by the throne until we join you.  Keep a place right beside you for us, your sons and daughters, in the
eternal homestead of God.  As a church, be it resolved;  1. That we thank God for the life of this dear sister
and submit to His will in placing this, one of His brightest jewels, in his Home above, and thank Him for the
assurance that she is reaping the reward of the faithful.  2. That we extend to the family our sympathy.
3. That a copy of these resolutions be placed upon the minutes of our church.  Adopted, March 6, 1909.
C. B. Grimes  J. A. Bilbo  Mrs. J. C. Jackson  Mrs. L. M. Wiggins, Committee."

Dickson Grimes in his e-mail to Nova Lemons, dated 10 Jan 2006, mentioned that one of the family lore has it
that Martha (Hardegree) Grimes came on a wagon train from Virginia to Coweta County [GA].  His Aunt Sue told
him this story several times.  "Unless Calvin and Martha went to Virginia sometime, I would guess that the trip was
actually from Clarke County.  Also, family lore says that she was sickly from the wagon train ride and never was
very healthy.  This picture obviously is from when she was pretty old.  She died in 1909, so I'd bet that she couldn't
have been that sickly and lived for 90 or so years."  Mr. Grimes sent a photo of Martha (Hardegree) Grimes and her
son [6.] Elisha Mortimer "Mort" Grimes who was his great-grandfather.
